The annual Summer Camp of Shorinjiryu Kenkokan Karatedo was held at the Nippon Budokan Training Center in Katsuura from July 14-16, 2012.
Katsuura is only a few hours drive from Tokyo and is more convenient than Okinawa, and as a result many children were able to attend the camp. They practiced hard for basic training of Kata, Kumite, Bunkai-Kumite and Mawari Keiko. After they had a full dinner following the second day of training, they played the Suika Wari (Watermelon Breaking) Game by cutting Suika with Karate chops, twist punches, even head-strikes. Moreover, they enjoyed the fireworks too. The camp gave them many great memories.
Masamitsu Shihan has been emphasizing the importance of running and brought the idea for training to the Summer Camp. Running is the base for any kind of sport and gives us power and speed. Running to the final goal is very important, even if the hill is steep or you want to quit. Everyone ran hard at the Summer Camp, and recovered their stamina quickly for further training in the dojo or on the beach.
In addition to training in the wonderful Nippon Budokan Training Center dojo, we trained on the Katsuura beach, both on the sand and in the ocean. Basic training of kicks and punches on the beach and in the water is very challenging, and it is difficult to maintain normal form. This training really demonstrates the idea that strong and stable leg balance is the basis for all sports.
