Comments on judging the technique of holding an opponent’s leg and executing a throw in a Koshiki Karatedo match:
During the Oceania Cup 2012, we could see many Russian and other competitors using the technique of holding an opponent’s leg and executing a throw.
Referees and competitors should clearly understand the difference between well controlled throwing techniques and dangerous throwing techniques, and the techniques should be judged and scored accordingly.
Effective technique: against an opponent’s middle level kick, escape the kick and grab the leg to execute a throw. This is a Yuko (point). The opponent’s leg or pants must be held for within 3 seconds in order for a point to be awarded.
Disallowed technique: after an opponent has scored an effective kick on the bogu, grab his leg, hold it on the bogu, and throw him/her. This throw is a Hansoku-chui (disqualification warning) because the opponent’s kick was awarded a point and would have been effective if no bogu was worn.
Competitors are not allowed to hold the Super-Safe equipment (face guard and body protector) in Kumite Shiai. Any attack or throw executed by holding the opponent’s Super-Safe is Hansoku-chui (disqualification warning).
Karate tournaments should be judged based on Tsuki-waza (punching techniques), Keri-waza (kicking techniques), Uchi-waza (striking techniques), and Ate-waza (hitting techniques) on the opponent’s Super-Safe equipment, using proper timing and distance with full power and control.
