The first Karate training of the Year of the Snake
On the early morning of the first training session of the new year, many members of Shorinji-ryu Kenkokan gathered to train at the Honbu Dojo, with a greeting of “A happy new year and good morning!”
Then, training commenced with the official greeting in the Dojo, “Shinzen ni gassho, Kaiso ni keirei and Shihan/Sensei ni rei.” Later, as representatives of all attendees, Mr. Ikki Tsuda, 1st Dan of Junior class and Mr.Mutsuto Hosomi, 1st Dan of Junior class, threw Salt and Rice in all four directions to pray for healthy training and progress thoughout the new year. All attendees joined in the New Year prayer.
Then, MVP of the last year, Mr. Shimizu who showed great results at the Oceania Cup in Australia, Summer camp in Chiba, and Euro Cup in Holland, struck together the wooden clappers, saying “Nichigetsu Seishin, Tenchi Shinmei, and Gassho” then “Kaiso Kori Hisataka, 10th dan, Kensei ni rei.”
Shihan Chiharu Takehana, who showed a great fight at the final match of the year end tournament with Shihan Paul Ford, 4th dan Kenshi, hit the Kiai Drum at the center of the Dojo. He also demonstrated wonderful Bunkai Kumite with Shihan Hitoshi Namekata and Shihan Yukio Sakamoto.
We prayed deeply for the improvement of technique and harder training, seeking to understand the truth of combat, with the cooperation of all members.
After that, each member in the Dojo struck the drum and announced with determination their Karate goals for the coming year, for all to hear.
The first training was led by the Chief Shihan Masamitsu Kudaka, 7th dan, and consisted of practicing “Ten Chi Jin Kumite”, Uchikomi with the Super Safe bogu, and “Kata Heian Yodan” many times.
We would like to concentrate our training for this year to aim at “power and speed.”
After the training, we enjoyed and ate “rice cake” of many flavors at a party joined by the karate members and the local neighborhood around the Hombu Dojo.
