To learn Koshiki Contact Karate, one needs to practice Kata and Kumite repeatedly. Through that, one can know the Mind, Technique and Body of Karate-do.

Kata and Kumite are like both hands and legs which work together with balance, power, and speed.

Kata is the special training method of Okinawa Karate. Historically Kata, the bible of Karate, were taught only to a teacher’s reliable students in secret.

To demonstrate Kata correctly, we need to understand and study every motion of the Kata, as follows:

(1) Ju-ho: throwing techniques, elbow techniques, choking techniques

(2) Go-ho: punching techniques, kicking techniques, striking techniques

(3) Buki-ho: Bo, Ken techniques

This is Bunkai-Kumite. By performing Bunkai-Kumite, the Kata itself becomes a usable application.

Again, to perform traditional Kata effectively, it is necessary to understand and practice Bunkai Kumite.

The Kumite of Karate originally started in Japan using a body protector (Bogu). As it spread to the world it developed into different forms of Non-Contact Karate (Sundome WKF style), Body-Contact Karate (Kyokushin Style), and Contact Karate (Koshiki Karate WKKF style ).

For aiming at Olympic recognition, Kumite should be a more modern and scientific, higher level of tournament system, considering safety and practicality while having a clear judgment system. Contestants, referees, and audiences need to clearly identify who wins and losses, in an exciting and dynamic competition format. To achieve this, the Technical Research Committees (Supervisor, So-Shihan Masayuki Kukan Hisataka ) of the World Union of Karate Organization ( President Ryoichi Sasakawa ) and the All Japan Karate Federation (Chairman Eiichi Eriguchi) developed a safety Karate protector through the Koshiki Contact tournament system. The World Union Karate Organization agreed to use this safety protector, the Super Safe, for aiming at Olympic recognition at its WUKO counsel in Germany. In this regard, Karate was selected as an Olympic Game for the Moscow Olympics, however, the Moscow Olympics were boycotted by democratic countries. More recently, Karate has been nominated three times as a candidate of the Olympic Games, but has not yet succeeded.

The Olympics will be held in Tokyo in 2020. This is a wonderful occasion for leaders of Karate-ka to re-establish the rules of Karate Kumite for the future development of Karate. To this end, we should decide that Karate Kumite has two sets of tournament rules, Non-Contact Kumite style and Contact Kumite style (Koshiki), and strongly work for Olympic recognition. Through this, we hope to give chances to young karate-ka to become Olympians. We need to work for this dream with full confidence.
